Imperfect and Okay

Summary: Coming up with an anniversary present is hard. Especially at the very last minute.

A/N: Writing on sleep deprivation for the third day straight…yay…

“Hey Bas,” Blaine grins as he hops into Sebastian’s car “Why’d you call me?” He notices Sebastian’s hands clutched firmly around the wheel, knuckles a ghostly white. “Sebastian?”

He doesn’t receive a reply, instead Sebastian speeds away from the driveway, heading onto the highway.

“Okay, chill Bas. What’s eating you?”

He still doesn’t receive a response and he is considering poking Sebastian firmly when a panicked voice rushes out of Sebastian’s mouth. “Our anniversary is tomorrow!”

Blaine blinks in surprise, “Yeah, so?” he takes in the look of absolute horror on Sebastian’s face as he puts the pieces together. “Wait, isn’t this like the third time you’ve forgotten your anniversary? In a row?”

“Yes…” Sebastian groans, flinging his head back until it hits the headrest with a soft thump. “You’re the romantic, Blainers. Help me think of something. Plus you did date him for a while.” Sebastian scowls a little at the reminder of Kurt’s past love life.

Blaine acknowledges the reference distractedly, brain cells firing. “Has his likes changed?”

“Um, still cars, clothes and musicals.…But that doesn’t inspire anything. None of these would be special enough.!”

“Okay,” Blaine says tiredly, “what does he want for your anniversary? Has he dropped any hints?”

Sebastian frowns as they pull off the highway until they’re reaching an empty field. “I…wouldn’t know.” Sebastian confesses, hiding his face. “I’ve been really busy at work lately, I’ve hardly had the time to see him, let alone talk to him.”

Blaine glares for a minute before reaching out an arm to slap Sebastian on the head. Hard. “Okay look Sebastian,” he says eventually, still glaring “you already the problems Kurt hides with his self-esteem. So don’t you think you’re adding fuel to the fire when you’ve practically ignore your boyfriend of a year in favour of work?”

Sebastian crosses his arms defiantly, “It’s important.”

“What is? Work, or your boyfriend?”

Sebastian is silent “Kurt.” he mumbles. Blaine’s grin is back in full force as he slaps Sebastian on the back. “Good! Now think, even if you didn’t talk to him all that much, Kurt must have left some sort of clue…”

Sebastian is lost in his daydream, retracing and replaying conversations over the last week. He finally lands on a comment from Kurt. 

“Can you believe the amount of studying that I’ve done? I swear, I need a break. Away from here.”

Sebastian notices the significance of that statement and runs through it in his mind. “I need a break…” He whips around his seat in excitement, “Blaine! I got it!”

“Awesome,” Blaine mutters, “just another hour’s drive. So what are you going to do for your anniversary?” He asks Sebastian, curiously. 

“You’ll find out but for now, I need backup.”

Sebastian was fidgeting when Kurt swept down the stairs, looking devastatingly handsome in a suit. 

“So where’re going?

“Somewhere.” Came Sebastian’s cryptic reply. “Now close your eyes tightly.”

Kurt did as he was told and was shoved into a taxi, pulse starting to rise.. Soon enough, the car had stopped and Sebastian and Kurt made their way out, Kurt’s hands warm and emanating heat as Sebastian led him to the terrace of the Smythe building. 

“Sebastian, can I look now?” Kurt starts to protest.

“Yeah…” Sebastian gives the entire set-up one last scan. “now.”

Sebastian observes the emotions that rush through Kurt’s face. Surprise and shock are dominant, followed by an admiring smile shot his way.

“Like it, babe?”

“Never knew you were a romantic.”

“Well, a man’s got to have some secrets.”

But Kurt isn’t listening anymore. Because he’s too busy marvelling at the terrace holiday Sebastian has set up. It looks just like Paris, his desktop background for the last week. He’d been hoping Sebastian would have caught the hint. The atmosphere is romantic and hazy, scented candles fill the air from various corners and a huge cutout of the Eiffel Tower is placed behind an elegant set of dining furniture to complete the picture. On the table, there are two menus and soft piano music drifts through the air like smoke, the notes tangling and ensnaring everyone with its dreamy wistfulness.

“This is amazing.” he breathes, pressing into Sebastian. “Only think that would make it better is we we could actually go to Paris.” He jokes but feels an envelope being pushed into his hand.

“Guess it got better.” Sebastian murmurs, lips against Kurt’s ear. “Love you babe.”

Kurt is speechless.

“Sorry for not being around that often. But my boss is giving me a promotion so I can work from home and I’ve got a week off for Paris?”

Kurt gapes up at Sebastian.

“I can’t believe you did this. All of this.”

Sebastian is tempted to say that Blaine helped, but he doesn’t want to spoil the moment or see Kurt look at Blaine with that look only meant for Sebastian himself. 

“So you forgive me?”

“Always.” Kurt says earnestly, subtext clearly conveyed, leaning up to brush a soft kiss onto Sebastian’s lips before walking off to survey the set.

Sebastian stares after him, knowing Kurt isn’t just talking about his absence; and thinks he can still feel butterfly wings sweeping against his lips as he licks them.

“Now let’s start planning the trip…ooh, is there escargot?…”

Sebastian smiles fondly at his boyfriend and sends off a quick text before joining him at the table.

I owe you…also, get the waiter’s uniform on faster. We’re waiting.
